  • My Bloody Valentine 3-D

    bloodyvalentine3dfinal

    Intro:

It’s been twenty five years since a horror film has been released in 3-D, and it’s been LONG overdue. Who knew the film that was being given the 3D treatment, surprise surprise,  would be a remake. So you think, OK, what will it be? a Friday the 13th, or A Nightmare on Elm Street remake in 3-D? Nope, it’s a little cult film from 1981 called My Bloody Valentine. Over the past year there has a lot of hype for this film, and needless to say I was very happy to see the 2009 release of Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine.

    Acting:

The acting had its high and lows to me.  Jensen  Ackles (Smallville, Supernatural) was one that was about 50/50 in this. There were times which he shined the brightest on the screen, but then again there were times when he seemed to be confused and even lost in what he was portraying. The actor I was most excited was Tom Atkins. This was his return to the horror genre after a eight year absence, and boy did he return with a bang. He seemed not to lose a step in the classic acting that we all know and love from films such as Halloween 3: The Season of the Witch and Night of the Creeps. Jaime King was another actor that semi-shined. She seemed to do such a great job when she had very emotional scenes, but seemed to fizzle out when in minor dialogue.

    Plot:

The plot was almost a exact copy of the original, with a few name changes. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the original, but I still vaguely remember the general plot. Now with a MUCH bigger budget I was hoping for a little reason for the killings; a motive, a backstory, something to help connect the original killer with the copycat, but that was not present. This bothered me some and I thought the movie would have been better off if it was included.

    Music:

Composed by Michael Wandmacher, the music, was REALLY catchy to me and I often found myself tapping my fingers along with the score. It helped the film pace at a decent speed. I enjoyed it a lot.

    Overall:

Overall everyone should go see this film in 3-D as its a historic event in horror. Is it the best film is years? No, but will you be entertained with the 3-D aspect; HELL YES. So for the 3-D and full frontal nudity, AND the epic return of Tom Atkins, Check it out.

    Intro:

All of our families have secrets. Like a child with an illness or disorder. For some reason, one member is embarrassed of it, and doesn’t even want them in their sights. I find that pretty low, and lousy ya know? If my son ever had an illness or deformity I wouldn’t shun him away, I’d embrace him like the family he is to me, not like the dad did in the 1982 release of Frank Henenlotter’s “Basket Case.”

    Intro:

If you know me at all by now, you KNOW i’m a sucker for anthology films. Through the good and the bad, the thick and the thin, i’m always up for a compilation of stories. I’ve seen TONS but there are still many i have yet to see. However one of my favorites, “The Vault of Horror” has seemed to be remade, or at least in my eyes, in the 2006 release of “Trapped Ashes.”

  • Waylon Bacon Shorts (Demo Reel)

This is a review of three short films by Director Waylon Bacon.

    Bob

The short starts out with a very strange looking man walking around town. He seems to be very well known and one of those people who you just can’t hate. After a series of “Hi Bob!!” from many other strange looking people (Such as a veteran, a hobo, a bag lady, business man, etc). Bob is then struck in the middle of the street, Killed upon impact. The driver of the car then looks back and then says “Sorry Bob.” The thing that really gets you is that abnormal make up done by Shannon Burla, which is grade A.

    Poster Boy

This short deals with a guy, who obviously isn’t healthy due to the color of his skin, looking around his house for cigarettes. We learn he smokes ALOT based on the massive amounts of empty cigarette packs around his house. So he proceeds to go out and buy some more. After he purchases them and starts smoking them, the public notices him. They all start coughing and see he is the one causing them to do so. They start chasing him around the city until he makes it back to his house. Once he is inside he races to the bathroom and starts to smoke again. After he takes a few puffs he notices lines begin to appear around his jaw. All of a sudden it just falls off. His chasers come in and think he did it himself to stop smoking. He is praised and then made into the next billboard, this is what will happen to you if you smoke, kind of deal. Really unique piece here, and it would not have been anywhere near as good as it is without the score by Jason Miller. The incredible special effects continue as Shannon Burla, with Jeff Lanzaga and Ali Ulrich, show off more of their work.

    My Worst Nightmare

This short was my favorite out of the whole group of them. I loved how it starts out in his dream, with him telling us about it in a voiceover. The fact that both his father and him were buried under two twin rosebushes is insane!!! He comes back and the ladies of the house, but they complain about how rude he was for coming back. They explained how it wasn’t fair to them, since they’ve grieved and recovered already. With that said, he proceeds to go back to his rosebushy grave. This one shows more of the creative side of the twisted world of Waylon Bacon. Also there are plans for this short to be made into a feature length film, which I think would be amazing to see.

  • Rapturious

    rapturious

    Intro:

What’s your price for fortune and fame? At what point do you realize that what you’ve done may have gone too far? Many times this is the case, you want something so bad that you become obsessed with getting it and have to obtain it at any cost, even if that cost includes death, like the fellow in the 2007 release of Kamal Ahmed’s “Rapturious.”

  • Shudder

    shudder-poster

    Intro:

We all talk to ourselves, no matter if you’re willing to admit it or not, we all do it. Whether it’s trying to solve a problem, or just making what you just said made sense. However there is a point where talking to yourself can cross a line. When you start talking to someone, or something, else besides yourself and you swear its there. Like the Mother and Uncle duo in the 2007 release of a Bloody Moon Films feature, “Shudder”, Directed by Ben Dixon.

  • Update from Patrick

Hey Guys! I just wanted to say hey, and give y’all an detailed update with what all is going on. I want to apologize for not writing a review in FOREVER. I know that they haven’t been coming out fast as they should, and in the numbers that they used to be. Hopefully in 09 we can get on the ball with that.

Shelby and I have been running like chickens with their heads cut off here lately trying to get rolling on "Urban Nights," and trying to maintain a happy medium with SquidFlicks. I have a great slew of ideas for videos for SquidFlicks in 2009, but keep the word down on that until the New Years post.

What I can talk about is what we have in store for Christmas this year. In November, me and Shelby agreed to try and have a "Silent Night, Deadly Night" movie marathon for Christmas, but time got the best of us and we had to scrap that till next year. As mentioned in the previous post, we filmed a video special the other night with Seth Middleton and Derek Bradley; The Christmas Edition of SquidFlicks Reel 2 Reel, will be up, and we talked about "Yule Die" with the actor and director. Christmas-themed reviews, and a short Christmas Special film will all be up in the next few days. I hope that you enjoy the Holiday season with your favorite movie review site, SquidFlicks.com!

    Peace, Love, Blame Eli Roth
