I stumbled across an interesting article today that provides some intriguing insight on the highly anticipated conclusion to the amazing and bleak trilogy on the Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan.
The premise:
While I am a little disappointed that the Riddler didn’t make an appearance in the final film (I still am holding out some semblance of hope/despair), some digging by determined fans shows some interesting clues that another character from the series could make a previously unannounced appearance: Batman’s faithful sidekick, Robin!
If the rumors prove true, will Nolan’s interpretation of Robin become a memorable addition to the series? Early talk has it that Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is excellent, so Robin will certainly have to make an impression if he shows up. (Cat got your tongue?)
After seeing this revelation, I am excited to potentially see Nolan’s dark twist on Robin. I think the evidence is at least a very interesting coincidence, but it sure seems like a safe bet to me. Read the article and form your own opinion, but I am not embarrassed to make the claim here: Robin will appear in the Dark Knight Rises.
If I am lucky, The Riddler will get a mention (doubtful, but hey, a man can dream…)
The site is back up and running! Unfortunately, I lost the backup of the images for the site, so I will be spending the next few days uploading new ones!
Well, it has finally been confirmed by no less than legendary anchorman Ron Burgundy himself that the sequel to the 2004 hit comedy, Anchorman, does exist, and will be hitting theaters sometime next year. Will Ferrel made a surprise (and hilarious) guest appearance as lead anchor Ron Burgundy on Conan with the news. He broke the news with a highly appropriate and somewhat transfixing “yazz” flute performance.
I am really excited for this sequel. Anchorman is quite possibly one of the most original and hilarious comedies of all time (ranking up there with Airplane) and I will definitely be watching this on the big screen in 2013. See, now there is no reason for the world to end – you have something to look forward to in 2013! =D
The tagline for the movie is pretty catchy, I must admit!
I certainly hope the movie lives up to the substantial amount of talk it has generated! I probably won’t get to see it this weekend, though. This would be the perfect opportunity for a guest review! =) *hinthint*
I swear if all these thousands of people lined up for the midnight showing see a debacle on the level of Pluto Nash, the armageddon may come sooner than predicted. And I will laugh. so. hard. I’d like to see this, and like I said, it had better live up to the hype. The books are pretty good! Remember kids, most movies come from books, and few movies are as good (or better) than the books. Imagination is how the old timers got by. Kids today are lazy! LAZY. But watching screens is easier than staring at musty, yellow pages in a well-used tome.
/rantover, enjoy the movie – but you should already be in the theater by now! If you are in the theater reading this – TURN OFF YOUR PHONE YOU SACK OF SQUID!
Director Ridley Scott looks to amaze the Sci-Fi Thriller world again with Prometheus. As any good Sci-fi fan knows, Scott is the man responsible for classics such as Alien and Blade Runner.
The plot follows the crew of the spaceship Prometheus in the year 2085, as they explore an advanced alien civilization in search of the origins of humanity. Conceived as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, rewrites developed a separate story that precedes the events of Alien, but which is not directly connected to the films in the Alien franchise. According to Scott, though the film shares “strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak”, and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and ideas. – Wikipedia excerpt
It looks pretty damn awesome to me. It’s been filmed entirely in 3D, and quite frankly looks fantastic just judging by the visuals in the trailer. I don’t think you should pass this film up when it comes out this summer! Who’s ready for some fantastic, three dimensional face-lovin’?
Release Date: June 8, 2012 (USA) Be there or be square.
I am, and always have been a huge Dr. Seuss fan. Like any good fanatic, I have read all the books and I have seen every single Seuss movie. Over the past fifteen years or so, there has been a shift from the original, classic animations of Seuss works – such as the “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” in 1966 – to live action and digitally animated adaptations. The first mainstream Seuss reboot was the 2000 remake of the Grinch, and the part was played fairly well by Jim Carrey. It was okay, but nowhere near as fantastic as Horton Hears a Who!, which was produced by Dreamworks Animation in 2008 and brought the voice talents of Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, and Carol Burnette.
From that success came the 2012 adaptation of The Lorax, which is by far my favorite Seuss character (edging the Grinch) and my favorite story by the good doctor. I believe that The Lorax is my favorite Seuss tale because I am a bit of an environmentalist and an outdoorsman, and the moral of this classic tale is one that endures throughout the generations.
Now that I’ve informed you of my well-versed past with the works of the Doctor, it’s time to get on with the critiquing of this latest adaptation!
I am a fan of Horton Hears a Who! – it had a great combination of voice talent, visual quality, and story. I found that Dreamworks Animation really took what they learned from Horton and expanded on it. The world that was animated looks as though Dr. Seuss himself was designing the 3D models. I was blown away at just how great of a job the studio did with the setting of this film – the illustrations of a Seuss book are a large reason why they are so engaging and awesome!
The voice talent in The Lorax was just as impressive as the visuals – The roles were flawlessly cast! Danny Devito as the Lorax was a fantastic match, as was Betty White voicing the grandmother of the protagonist Ted. While I am not a fan of Zac Efron’s prior work (The High School Musical series, for those REALLY out of the loop), he did a great job providing the voice of Ted. I was equally impressed with the voice talent of Taylor Swift, who is more inclined to be behind the mic onstage rather than in a movie studio. Her role as Ted’s love interest seemed genuine and fit well. Although the characters are additions to the original story, I felt that it was perfectly okay and it seemed to fit well with the rest of the plot.
While the movie is longer than the actual book (It is very difficult to adapt a feature length movie from a 20-30 page children’s book!) I feel that it was overall decent. The movie is not as subtle as the book in its message, and I did find myself missing the bittersweet, somewhat darker version of the original Seuss story. The movie really expands on the Once-ler’s family, and seems to portray the capitalist who ravaged the nature around him in pursuit of corporate profit as a bit naive. I welcomed the addition of Mr. O’hare, a tycoon who makes his fortune selling fresh air in bottles (much like water in our world) to the smog-choked citizens of Thneedville, the 100% plastic utopia that keeps the people from seeing the true devastation of the world outside.
All in all, I think it was a great movie. I was blown away by the animation and color – 100% Seuss. The voice talent was great, and the story, while different, panned out to be acceptable when compared to the original. The inclusion of several musical numbers was unexpected but not too annoying – it also seemed to add to the very “Seussy” feeling. Also, I doubt there’s any difference (other than price) when viewing this movie in standard or 3D format. I had no choice in the matter, watching the 3D version because that was the only choice at the theater. (I also did not suffer the headaches that can result from 3D movies, so that was nice!)
See the pretty Truffla Trees!

It’s worth seeing!
Well, if the Mayans are correct (which is highly unlikely), this is the final St. Patrick’s Day we will ever see! SquidFlicks has always taken St. Patty’s Day seriously – perhaps a bit too seriously! Even though we don’t have any new hilarity for the holiday, I would like to highlight some of the fun we’ve had in the past. Memories are priceless, and you should be ‘green’ with envy after experiencing this flashback!
Stick to the green beer – I wouldn't dip any of the Chicago River in my glass!
Now, to start things off I think it would be best to travel all the way back to 2008, when the first SquidFlicks St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated. We decided to dedicate the first SF St. Patrick’s Day to the famous Leprechaun horror movie series, and the celebration came with the posting of reviews of the four movies in the series. It wasn’t anything too fancy, but it was the start of a tradition for SquidFlicks. We would up the ante the next year!
We do need to add a review for the ever-classic Leprechaun 5, which placed our favorite murderous Irishman in da hood!
Leprechaun Series Movie Reviews
Leprechaun (published before St. Paddy’s Day 2008)
From 2009 on, we really got crazy. It started with a simple special guest article from Tim Gross, who was the first of several celebrity guests that Patrick would reel in for SquidFlicks! That’s SHOWBUSINESS BABY!
We also conducted an interview with Brian Trenchard-Smith, who directed Leprechaun:
There was also a Leprechaun Movie Marathon (which is part of the soon-coming Lost Tapes archive), and in the obligatory boredom that ensues from watching 12 hours of horror films back-to-back, the 3-annual Capri Sun Challenge was born:

There was also the St. Patrick’s Day Bake-off:

Thanks to college and life in general, there was no St. Patrick’s Day love in 2011 from SquidFlicks. That’s why I worked hard to bring something to the table this Patty’s Day (even though I technically finished it late!)
Thanks for all the memories, SquidFlickians! I certainly raise my glass to new beginnings – aka finish my draft queue from hell!
I will be attending the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 tonight!
I am psyched, and will post a review of the movie tomorrow!
Edit: So yea, it was friggin’ amazing, and my review will be coming later TODAY, see what I did there? It’s today now, not tomorrow. Anyway, off to sleep and then a short work shift – afterwards, Pottervision!
News around Hollywood is buzzing that Ryan Dunn (above) died in a terrible car wreck early this morning. It appears that alcohol and speed were factors in the accident. While I am a fan of the Jackass series, I am not a fan of drunk driving. Regardless of the reasons for the wreck, it is a tragic loss for both the Jackass family (which seems to survive everything else they do) and his family and friends. Dunn was only 34 years old. RIP Ryan.
Okay, I am officially a Potter Fanatic, as is many of the SquidFlicks faithful, and the world at large is just now learning about the trailer release for the final chapter in the Potter saga.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the continuation of the final book, which was split into two parts. This is the final film in the series, and chronicles the final epic battle between good and evil, Harry and Voldemort.
