  • Late Night Read-through

Hello there, take a seat if you will; Here is the story of Shelby, the producer of Urban Nights. After hitting a family & friends holiday party this Friday night, I wrapped up the rest of the evening sitting in a loooong read-through of the Urban Nights script.

Why weren’t we filming? Good question. Our location canceled their appointment to let us film tonight, so we will regroup and try again next week. Not wanting to waste valuable time, we opted to have the cast read through and adjust the scripts.

After all the re-reads and edits, we decide to watch an Independent film that was made by one of the cast members of Urban Nights. The movie was Yule Die, directed by Seth Middleton. A special video review was spawned in the middle of the night, and will be out this week as part of the SquidFlicks Christmas festivities.

We were finished at around 3 AM Saturday morning. I am still tired. 😀

  • On the horizon: Top movies of 2009

So, 2008 is almost over. There have been a LOT of great movies this year, but that’s the past. There is someone who has created a list of what they think will be the top movies of the upcoming year.

Is this list 100% correct? No, but I think that some of these movies will be worth checking out next year. After seeing what movies I look forward to, visit the article and see the other top titles that have been selected.

Keep reading to see the picks!

  • Is Christmas supposed to be scary?

    silent-night-deadly-night

When you think of all the Christmas holiday seasons you have lived through, what do you remember the most? What do you associate the holiday with? Most of us would say ‘Santa’ or ‘Christmas trees’ and especially that combination of red and green.

What you probably don’t think of is the dark side of Christmas, the side that for most of the present has remained pretty dormant. Just because it is dormant does not mean that it doesn’t have any strength, because every few years the dark side of Christmas comes out in society.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about Christmas-based horror movies! Yes, the classics with names like Silent Night, Deadly Night; Black Christmas; and Jack Frost, just to name a few. These films were released right during the holiday season, and caused a huge amount of controversy. What else would you expect from free speech?

Personally, I don’t care too much for x-mas slasher films, but they are a very interesting and unique sub-genre of horror movie. It’s always good to have some variety in an otherwise very uniform holiday across much of the world, and that variety is the Christmas horror movie.

My favorite Christmas movie with a horror/creepy twist is Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas. Not really a horror movie per se, but it is still a slightly dark montage of Halloween and Christmas. Another great and slightly twisted tale is The Grinch who Stole Christmas.(original version, but the remake was ok)

Patrick and I wanted to do a Silent Night, Deadly Night movie marathon, but we don’t have the entire series in the archive nor the time to film and have the footage ready. We plan on having another surprise instead this year.

Do you like the Christmas horror classic, or do you like to snuggle up to the yearly re-run of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Comment below!

  • First Look: Monsters versus Aliens

    monsters-vs-aliens

I can’t wait to see this movie; there was a preview for it when I went to go see Madagascar: Back 2 Africa. I really think that it’s going to be AWESOME!

It is starring many famous names in entertainment today:

    • Reese Witherspoon
    • Hugh Laurie (HOUSE, M.D.)
    • Will Arnett
    • Seth Rogen
    • Stephen Colbert
    • Kiefer Sutherland
    • Rainn Wilson (better known as Dwight K. Shrute)

Seriously, there are some very nice animated movies that have come out in the past few years, and I hope this proves to be another addition to that list!

  • Weekend Box Office: Nov. 28-30

Sorry for the late update, it’s been a crazy week here at HQ!

This weekend’s top five were a variety of movies and genres, from number one being Vince Vaghn’s Four Chistmases to James Bond in Quantum of Solace.

Bolt, a story involving an animated dog who thinks he’s a superhero opens in second place, Australia remains in the top five through its second week of release.

Twilight remains in the top five with another big weekend box office. Overall all the films in the top five grossed over $10 million, signifying that more people are going out to the theaters as the holiday season progresses.

I look forward to what a rerelease of The Dark Knight into theaters will make – stay tuned!

I also hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving weekend!

  • What’s changed: Movie Studio logos of the past century

Over the past century, the great American movie studio companies have changed almost as much as their logos did. See this great article that shows us what the logos looked like over the years.

Also, as a trivia tidbit, you learn the names of the MGM lions over the years! 😛

  • How hard could it be? DTV in 2009

Hopefully you have heard the news; All broadcasts in the United States will be changing to digital over the old analog, and if you don’t have a modern TV, you could be left out in the dark.

Many people don’t have TVs with the automatic DTV connection, and there are some solutions to remedy that problem. One of the most advertised solutions is a DTV converter box, which you can add to an existing TV set. There is a government rebate to be had when you purchase a converter as well. Two other solutions are available – subscribing to cable or satellite TV to receive digital content, or purchasing a modern TV that has a DTV adapter built into it.

Since many people have and will use the converter box, someone made this hilarious video showing just how confused some of the less-technical population will be when trying to hook the converter up to the TV.

    Enjoy!

EDIT: The first video was removed for copyright reasons (Seriously?) on youtube,  and I was able to find a second version! See it before it’s gone!

  • Sites we Like: Tastekid.com

A recent find of mine was a relatively new but ever growing http://www.tastekid.com/ website.

It takes a bunch of information you provide, and uses it to match movies, music, and other media to your tastes. While it is still new and has some glitches, it was pretty good at recommending items for my tastes.

I thought you all would like to see how well the machine can read your mind! o_O

  • Terminator Salvation Movie Poster

This is an awesome graphic for the new Terminator movie. Terminator Salvation, that is premiering May 29, 2009. I am looking forward to the movie, even though Ah-nold won’t be playing a major role. =(

I guess really the image is more of a flash video than a ‘image’ but it’s awesome anyway!
