  • Viacom, Vampire of syndicated media

Why can’t we have nice things?

Well, here we go again – Viacom is holding another content provider in limbo because they want more money. Will it ever stop? Increase the quality and accessibility of your precious “products” and maybe money will flow! How do you expect to gain any advertisement opportunities if there is no way to watch your shows? It’s not a difficult concept to grasp.

Sometimes greed blinds us, but I honestly don’t know why millions of people have to go without some of TV’s most popular channels because Viacom can’t sit down and make a fair deal with DIrecTV. Pitiful, and hopefully it doesn’t last weeks. I remember a similar situation with Viacom and Dish Network not that long ago – 6 or 7 years tops.

  • Is Robin in The Dark Knight Rises?

    It’s a TRILOGY, Batman!

I stumbled across an interesting article today that provides some intriguing insight on the highly anticipated conclusion to the amazing and bleak trilogy on the Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan.

    The premise:
While I am a little disappointed that the Riddler didn’t make an appearance in the final film (I still am holding out some semblance of hope/despair), some digging by determined fans shows some interesting clues that another character from the series could make a previously unannounced appearance: Batman’s faithful sidekick, Robin!

If the rumors prove true, will Nolan’s interpretation of Robin become a memorable addition to the series? Early talk has it that Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is excellent, so Robin will certainly have to make an impression if he shows up. (Cat got your tongue?)

After seeing this revelation, I am excited to potentially see Nolan’s dark twist on Robin. I think the evidence is at least a very interesting coincidence, but it sure seems like a safe bet to me. Read the article and form your own opinion, but I am not embarrassed to make the claim here: Robin will appear in the Dark Knight Rises.

If I am lucky, The Riddler will get a mention (doubtful, but hey, a man can dream…)

  • Back…Sort of

The site is back up and running! Unfortunately, I lost the backup of the images for the site, so I will be spending the next few days uploading new ones!

  • St. Patty’s Day 2012 (LATE!)

Well, if the Mayans are correct (which is highly unlikely), this is the final St. Patrick’s Day we will ever  see! SquidFlicks has always taken St. Patty’s Day seriously – perhaps a bit too seriously! Even though we don’t have any new hilarity for the holiday, I would like to highlight some of the fun we’ve had in the past. Memories are priceless, and you should be ‘green’ with envy after experiencing this flashback!

Stick to the green beer – I wouldn't dip any of the Chicago River in my glass!

Now, to start things off I think it would be best to travel all the way back to 2008, when the first SquidFlicks St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated. We decided to dedicate the first SF St. Patrick’s Day to the famous Leprechaun horror movie series, and the celebration came with the posting of reviews of the four movies in the series. It wasn’t anything too fancy, but it was the start of a tradition for SquidFlicks. We would up the ante the next year!

We do need to add a review for the ever-classic Leprechaun 5, which placed our favorite murderous Irishman in da hood!

    Leprechaun Series Movie Reviews

From 2009 on, we really got crazy. It started with a simple special guest article from Tim Gross, who was the first of several celebrity guests that Patrick would reel in for SquidFlicks! That’s SHOWBUSINESS BABY!

We also conducted an interview with Brian Trenchard-Smith, who directed Leprechaun:

There was also a Leprechaun Movie Marathon (which is part of the soon-coming Lost Tapes archive), and in the obligatory boredom that ensues from watching 12 hours of horror films back-to-back, the 3-annual Capri Sun Challenge was born:

There was also the St. Patrick’s Day Bake-off:

Thanks to college and life in general, there was no St. Patrick’s Day love in 2011 from SquidFlicks. That’s why I worked hard to bring something to the table this Patty’s Day (even though I technically finished it late!)

Thanks for all the memories, SquidFlickians! I certainly raise my glass to new beginnings – aka finish my draft queue from hell!

  • Harry Potter midnight premeire!

I will be attending the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 tonight!

I am psyched, and will post a review of the movie tomorrow!

Edit: So yea, it was friggin’ amazing, and my review will be coming later TODAY, see what I did there? It’s today now, not tomorrow. Anyway, off to sleep and then a short work shift – afterwards, Pottervision!

  • An Apology

Hey guys! I’m not real sure if anyone is visiting SquidFlicks anymore since output has gone to squat. I want to change that here and now. SquidFlicks was founded because I loved watching movies and sharing them with others. I went to college last fall and pretty much forgot about the site. Now, its summer again and I want to make up for lost time.

Now you may wonder what prompted me to log in and write this post today, and I will tell you why – Waylon Bacon, a short film director who we have featured before – submitted a new film for review via our film submission form. I got to thinking, and realized that SquidFlicks was made by independent film artists for independent film artists, and if I give up on them then it would be a shame.

SquidFlicks wants to review Independent Films. We want to help your project make it to the next level. What’s more, The IndepenDEX, another web project of mine, was made specifically for short film directors to list their projects.

Come on back, and gather around the old TV guys – It’s movie time!

  • Fate of the Future

       Hello SquidFlicks Nation,

Many things have been changing here at SquidFlicks over the past year. We have developed new content and have succeeded in maintaining more consistent postings. However, the dawning of change had to come.

With the split of the SF homeland, Shelby going to Lexington and attending UK, and me attending WKCTC and staying in our hometown, things would become more difficult to make. We had originally planned to have SquidFlicks divide into two factions, SquidFlicks Red & SquidFlicks Blue. I was to be in charge of Squidflicks Red and Shelby with SF Blue, and we would do our own content on our own time. As i started to work on content for SF Red, I realized that things would get too complicated. SquidFlicks shouls cover all genres, and I have been focusing on mainly horror, sci-fi, etc. I felt that I should put SquidFlicks into the hands of it’s captain, Shelby. After 2, nearly 3 years at SquidFlicks i’m officially announcing my departure as a full time staff member from the site. It’s been an honor to be able to work and make content with some of my best friends, and this is such a hard thing to do.  I’m still hoping to work on some joint projects between my new site that’s in development, www.horrorhutproductions.com, and SF. We will still have Jack the Janitor on both sites, and i can already tell you the New Year’s Eve Bash will be a joint project. I want to thank everyone for ever watching and checking out the site. I hope everyone will check out the new site, and I will always have a plac ein my heart for SquidFlicks.

    All My Best,

    -Patrick M. Farmer

  • Indiana Jones in a FINAL crusade to the Bermuda Triangle?

    Indy meets
    Cult sci-fi thrillers!

Well, I stumbled across some murmurs through the film industry today that’s pretty dang interesting. Rumor has it that a fifth and final installment of the immensely popular Indiana Jones movie franchise is in the works. The latest film was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which came out in 2008. Prior to that, the series had been inactive since 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The film is still in planning stages, and has not been fully confirmed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is. Both Harrison Ford and Shia LeBouf will return as the father and son adventure pair that was revealed in the fourth film. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the film is that it is supposed to take place in and around the mysterious Bermuda Triangle. I think as long as George Lucas and crew cut down on the CGI-fest that was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and focus on the real action and plot that made the first three films such huge successes, Indiana Jones can end in style.

Look forward to more news as this develops!

Its all over the place in various states of fractured factuality, but I think the sole concept is true – there is a fifth Indy coming, but I don’t think it’s next year. YMMV

  • SquidFlicks Summer School is in session

I hope you kids have enjoyed your summer vacations, because it’s all over now! You have to complete all the work you didn’t do during the year! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!

Your class schedules will be posted soon! Enjoy your summer kiddos! In the meantime, check out all the reviews below that our students have been writing as part of their punishment!

  • If I May Update

Hello everyone! If you have been visiting the site with any frequency this month, you will have no doubt noticed the lack of consistent updates. I just wanted to let everyone know that it has been a very crazy month for Patrick and I as we prepare for graduation from High School this coming weekend.

There is a lot of fun stuff coming up in the next few weeks when our Summer School session officially begins, so don’t worry!

Hope your May hasn’t been as crazy, but if you’ve been in this position before, you know how busy and stressful it can be. At least it only happens once, right? (At least for high school).

    See you soon!
