  • The Babadook

    the-babadook

When you experience loss, it is important to let yourself experience grief. It is a natural emotion and for many, it is just a part of life. If grief is left to its own desires, however, it can tear a person apart. The Babadook is a psychological horror film that tackles this concept head on, to great effect.

The movie focuses on a widow, Amelia, and her young son, Samuel. The movie opens to a slow motion nightmare of Amelia’s, reliving the car wreck that claimed the life of her husband when she was in labor with Sam. The viewer is quickly acquainted with what has become of Amelia’s life as a single mother with a whacked-out son – a stressful slog with no real help or end in sight. Sam’s behavior is incorrigible, taking apart items in the house to construct elaborate weapons to vanquish the various monsters he claims to encounter.

Amelia is clearly miserable and has not moved on from the loss of her husband, keeping his belongings locked up in the basement and reacting violently to anyone who mentions him. She suffers from tremendous depression and sleep deprivation – I’d wager to call it melancholy. Sam’s behavior has driven her to wit’s end, and it shows. The final straw comes when Sam brings his weapons to school and is consequently expelled. Amelia is stuck with Sam at home and it’s not helping either one cope with the obvious emotional issues they possess.

Amelia lets Sam pick a book for his bedtime story – problem is, it’s not one that Amelia remembers putting on the shelf, much less buying. With the title ‘Mister Babadook’, you immediately know this is the beginning of the end. What follows after opening that book is the culmination of a possession – or psychosis. It appears as the metaphorical opening of a door that can’t shut because of a lack of proper emotional/spiritual latches.

That’s the beauty of this movie – it works on multiple levels. At face value, the Babadook is an evil demon that feeds on children and wants nothing more than to inflict misery on all who let him in to their homes. If you dig a little deeper, you can see the symbolism and manifestation of Amelia’s grief, causing severe psychosis and sleep deprivation. This one-two punch leads to Amelia’s wholesale abuse and neglect of young Sam, who acts out because he is powerless to handle the situation he’s stuck in.

Amelia has internalized the abuse of her son and conveniently packages it as the fault of a boogeyman – The Babadook. Subtle hints are scattered throughout the film, but the one that led me to the realization that things weren’t as they seem came when Amelia admitted to writing children’s books in the past. She created ‘Mister Babadook’ during one of her manic episodes, and doesn’t realize it when she normalizes. The ending is about as ambiguous as you can get, (I think she’s dreaming and actually ended up doing something horrible to Sam) and the entire ride is well worth it.

The Babadook was one of the best horror/thriller films I’ve seen. I really appreciated the lo-fi, practical effect approach (being more reliant on lighting and obscured shots to build tension and fear without resorting to incessant jump scares. Excellent execution throughout – the movie seems concise and every scene plays a role in building the larger story, and really build that age-old lesson that our own monsters are far worse than anything we can conjure up. Additionally, the book and illustrations were very well done, and would make an awesome reproduction prop. They really should produce and sell that to kids. That’s just some good, clean fun for all ages. =D

    It’s a must watch!

    The Video Review

    The Written Review

First of all, I would like to extend my apologies to Matt for the tremendous delay. He sent us this film before they released it in Summer 2014 and we managed to drop the ball pretty hard. Fortunately, Matt is a real cool guy and reminded us to finish the work – which we did! As a small consolation for the lateness of this review, I decided to also give it the video review treatment!

Now, on to the review. I’m not real sure where to start with NN – it’s definitely a campy movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but there are some serious moments. Things start off quickly with scenes of an eerie mansion and a shady van patrolling the ‘hood, undoubtedly up to no good. Of course, there’s a quick kidnapping by a creep and soon the friends of the misplaced step up to solve the crime.

Upon entering the house, the group encounters a menagerie of bizarre situations and characters, ranging from silent knife wielding wackos to resident mutant rocker Bud. The group manages to stumble across the way to access the obligatory basement laboratory, and have a chance to rescue the damsel and end the horror show that is plaguing the neighborhood!

There were some great camera angles, characters, and lines. We really thought the CGI was impressive (if a little cheesy, but hey, you actually did some post work). The music added a TON to the atmosphere as well. There are some minor issues with pacing and plot development, but if anything it adds to the campy and grungy feel of the flick. I got the same vibe I got from other great B-movie fare like The Toxic Avenger and other Troma masterpieces.

Overall, we found NN to be an enjoyable movie, especially if you are a fan of B-movies and campy horror. It was a worthy candidate for our first *International* independent film submission! I would like to extend kudos to Matt for incorporating CG effects into the film – something that I have yet to attempt. Meeting Bud was a trip and I think that he’s definitely got a future in the series. This definitely should be a series. I’m thinking about a 4-5 film story arc with promotional tie-ins.

Iconic actor Robert Z’Dar set to appear in slasher throwback Easter Sunday
Currently in production in Virginia, raising funds on Kickstarter

It seems every holiday was used as the backdrop for an ’80s slasher movie – with the exception of Easter… until now!

Northgate Pictures is currently in production in Virginia on Easter Sunday. The gritty throwback to the golden era of slasher films is based on an urban legend about an axe-wielding killer who wears a rabbit costume.

Kickstarter campaign has been launched in order to raise the funds necessary to complete the film. Although the $2,000 goal has already been exceeded, the filmmakers are still accepting support in order to create the best movie possible. Supporters can donate anywhere from $1 to $275, with rewards including producer credits, roles in the film, screen-used props, artwork, memorabilia, autographs and more.

Easter Sunday is written and directed by Jeremy Morehead, an exciting new filmmaker with a lifelong passion for horror. Genre fans will recognize iconic actor Robert Z’Dar (Maniac Cop, Tango & Cash) as the film’s Sheriff Arkin and indie regular Edward X. Young (Mr. Hush, Sea of Dust) as demonologist Angus Bradley. The cast also includes Jeremy Morehead, Valerie Foos, Jon McCoy, Anne Morehead, Travis Morton and Jason Delgado.

Easter Sunday aims to return to the slasher genre’s roots by relying on tension, suspense, camerawork, character development and black humor, rather than quick editing and jump scares. “I feel like a lot of horror films being released these days don’t have the heart and soul that the genre films from the ’80s had,” explains Morehead. “Our goal is to create a film that pays homage to all the films that made us horror fanatics.”

    Synopsis:
It’s been 24 years since the deranged serial killer Douglas Fisher was executed by police on Easter night. This year, a group of hard partying teenagers not only raise some hell, but literally raise the dead! The teens accidentally conjure the spirit of Douglas Fisher… aka the bunny masked killer. These teens have until midnight on Easter to stop the evil bunny slasher, or he will tear their town and everyone in it into pieces. There will be no candy in your Easter basket, just the limbs and body parts of your family and friends.

  • Bigfoot-Themed Horror/Comedy STOMPING GROUND Launches Finishing Funds Kickstarter Campaign

Indie Film Features Theresa Tilly from Sam Raimi’s THE EVIL DEAD

Producers Brad Lavery and Mike De Trana, along with award-winning director Dan Riesser, have launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign seeking finishing funds for their independently-financed feature film Stomping Ground. The campaign began on March 11th and runs until April 9th. Nearly half of the $15,000 goal has already been raised. The film is seeking financing to aid with editing, color correction, sound design and visual FX.

Stomping Ground can best be described as a “scary relationship comedy about love and Bigfoot hunting.” It tells the story of Ben and Annie, a couple living in Chicago, on a weekend trip to Annie’s small North Carolina hometown. At the local bar they run into Paul, an old friend of Annie’s, and Ben learns something he never knew about his girlfriend: She believes in Bigfoot. In fact, she and her friends used to “hunt” for the creature when they were kids. Before Ben knows it, he’s off on an impromptu Squatchin’ trip deep in the Carolina backwoods. Amidst the Squatch calls, campfire stories and beers, Ben quickly realizes that Paul may have an ulterior motive in bringing Annie to the woods. And something else out here seems to be after her as well. Everyone but Ben thinks its Bigfoot. But it can’t be, can it? After all, Bigfoot isn’t real…

Stomping Ground is was shot in October 2012 in North Carolina, mostly in the Uwharrie National Forest, an area well known for its Bigfoot sightings. The film stars an amazing cast including John Bobek, Tarah DeSpain, Jeramy Blackford and Justin Giddings. It also features a special appearance by Theresa Tilly, who is best known for her role in Sam Raimi’s horror classic, The Evil Dead. Among the exciting prizes, Kickstarter pledgers have the opportunity to receive a signed piece of Evil Dead memorabilia from the actress. Read an update regarding Tilly’s involving in Stomping Ground here.

Director Dan Riesser is a filmmaker and television producer whose short films have played at festivals across the world. His 2010 short film Night of the Punks was an official selection at over 25 film festivals including Screamfest LA. His producing and directing work can be seen weekly on E! Entertainment’s The Soup with Joel McHale. Stomping Ground is his first feature film.

  • Campfire Stories

Campfire Stories. Hearing that title you expect to hear, or see rather, stories that leave your bones cold even though your body is warm, stories that give you goosebumps all over your body. Stories that are suppose to give you nightmares and cause you pain. Pain that’s brought on by the suspense of the story, and NOT by the horrible acting of one. Sadly, the only pain you’ll be experiencing while you watch the 2002 release of “Campfire Stories” is just that.

You can pretty much tell the direction this whole thing is going within the first five minutes of the film. Shot on video, you can tell the budget wasn’t too big, so you have to lower your expectations a tad so that you can appreciate the film for its stories it’s trying to relay through the film. I found myself not appreciating anything from this film.

The wraparound focuses on two young men driving down a deserted road and stopping suddenly at the sight of a young, female traveler (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) standing in their path who also claims to have had car trouble (though her car is nowhere to be seen). The travelers decide to team up and look for help by, of course, wandering into the woods, and this is where they encounter a very unsettling David Johansen playing an oddball character called “Ranger Bill.”

The stories start horrible, but they do get better as each one passes. The only shining hope in this one is Sigler, maybe its because i liked her so much in The Sopranos. I can’t say I’d ever recommend this to ANYONE but if you want to watch ever horror anthology, like me, it’s one you’ll have to suck up and endure.

Overall, Campfire Stories is a poorly written, acted, and directed film. It’s one of the WORST anthology films to be put on DVD. Avoid Campfire Stories, but SEE Campfire Tales. Kudos to Jamie-Lynn Sigler in this one.
