  • Adele is the new Bond Girl – Skyfall theme

Adele just released the new theme song for the 23rd Bond film – Skyfall. Sounds pretty good even though I’m not a huge Adele fan. Most importantly, it’s getting me pumped up for Skyfall, which lands in theaters on November 9!

    What do you think?

  • Tragedy Bound to the Dark Knight Rises

You are all no doubt aware of the senseless tragedy that ensued on the opening night of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado: A lone gunman killed 12 and injured at least 58 others during the screening of the film.

What are the repercussions of this tragedy? The usual response to any shooting. There are calls for increased gun control and then an opposite (and equal) reaction from gun rights activists. Politicians express sympathy and vow to make changes, whether or not it’s sincere. Obviously, the families and local community have their lives forever altered because of the actions of one, horrifically ill man.

Perhaps the most devastating impact is the one that is inflicted on the entire American public – the fear that is mongered by attention-grabbing and disaster-loving news outlets that this man was groomed into a psychotic murderer by violent video games, violent movies, violent television, and furthermore, a more apathetic society. Everyday conversations for weeks after the massacre are dominated by discussions of the event, motives of the shooter, sympathy for the victims, and a fear that the entire thing could happen again, and anyone could become a new victim.

The simple fact of the matter is that with this glorification of the perpetrator, the attention given for days and weeks and years after they commit their crime, only serves to encourage the next person like him. A person leaning on the edge of sanity only has to see the amount of attention such actions can gather, and then they see a chance to do something similar, just to be heard. That’s the true crime here – the media creates the next monster, our fear feeds them. It’s not video games and movies – it’s cable news and the desire for nothing but negative announcements. Another culprit – not helping someone you think could be going through depression or has been having suicidal thoughts. People who lose all hope in life become the ones who want to go out with a loud, and often violent, finale. We need to be good friends, family members, and neighbors to recognize signs of mental illness and respectfully/lovingly assist.

Another vicim, thanks to the previously described glorification of the perpetrators of these horrific crimes, is the entire American population. After these events, society itself becomes a victim to irrational fear of death itself. Death is inevitable, and the simple, mathematical (and rational) fact is that 99.9% of us will not be the victim of a deranged killer, much less a massacre in a crowded movie theater.

We shouldn’t change the way we live our lives to “avoid” the chances of being in a situation similar to the incident on July 20, 2012. I have seen and heard many people expressing their newfound fear of theaters and that “they won’t be seeing a movie for a long time” thanks to this horrible, but isolated, incident. In a more specific example, all the negative press and public fear had a negative impact the box office performance of the film – for a reason out of anyone’s grasp.

There’s a fine line between sympathy and sanity. Let’s absolutely keep the victims of this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers, but let’s not boycott this movie, and better yet the industry, over a crazy man. You’re letting him and other cowards like him win in the end.

  • The Dark Knight Rises – Fading to Gray?

The third film falls short in this reviewer’s opinion.

A big thanks to Emil for this review!

What it lacks in storytelling, it attempts to cover with massive explosions and crashes and even more garish Han Zimmer scores. Nolan has a penchant for these. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) plot seems strikingly similar to Batman Begins (2005) although far more muddled and the delivery far too long and tedious throughout. The characters are vastly less well developed; in particular, Bane’s ‘badness’ – played by Tom Hardy – pales in comparison to those prior more sinister evildoers in the earlier Nolan films. Christian Bale, who returns as the Dark Knight, lacks the direct emotional cords that tied him – and us – to both Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008): no stakes for the courageous man, only obstacles for the dispassionate superhero. Obvious omissions in the story are commonplace – laughable in parts – for example, at one point Gotham Police are trapped for months in the city’s sewer system, yet when freed look as if they are leaving for work on a routine morning: bathed, shaved, and dressed as immaculately (hats included) as when they were trapped months earlier! Add numerous similar omissions, a lack of dark stealthiness the prior two films epitomized – which incidentally, is glaringly absent, and the unforgivably commercial ending and Nolan has done what his antagonists’ could not. Do Gotham and your fellow moviegoers a favor: wait until you can rent it for a $1, or better yet – wait to catch it free online – else, such dark nights will indeed rise again.

    2 out of 5

Do you have a different opinion about this movie? Why not submit a rebuttal review?

  • Criticize the Dark Knight Rises?

    You mad, bro?

Adamant fans are loosing their minds and posting some pretty vicious responses to the handful of negative reviews that The Dark Knight Rises has garnered all across the internet. Nolan’s telling everyone to chill, because he (and anyone sensible) knows this movie will be awesome, no matter what one out of every ten “professional” critics thinks.

I think the only thing sillier than fans attacking the negative reviews would be the reviewing critics themselves. Who thinks this movie is going to be a letdown? I just can’t think there’d be any other reason for a negative review besides serving as link bait (and ad revenue from all the raging fans).

Anywho, I’m just ready for the weekend so I can watch this thing!

    Wild Fact:
Did you know that Bane is a republican, and Nolan wrote his part to defile presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and the entire Republican Party? Naw, that’s impossible. Silly Rush Limbaugh. Seriously, you’re a sillyhead. Batman has no politics, only justice!

  • Viacom, Vampire of syndicated media

Why can’t we have nice things?

Well, here we go again – Viacom is holding another content provider in limbo because they want more money. Will it ever stop? Increase the quality and accessibility of your precious “products” and maybe money will flow! How do you expect to gain any advertisement opportunities if there is no way to watch your shows? It’s not a difficult concept to grasp.

Sometimes greed blinds us, but I honestly don’t know why millions of people have to go without some of TV’s most popular channels because Viacom can’t sit down and make a fair deal with DIrecTV. Pitiful, and hopefully it doesn’t last weeks. I remember a similar situation with Viacom and Dish Network not that long ago – 6 or 7 years tops.

  • Is Robin in The Dark Knight Rises?

    It’s a TRILOGY, Batman!

I stumbled across an interesting article today that provides some intriguing insight on the highly anticipated conclusion to the amazing and bleak trilogy on the Dark Knight by Christopher Nolan.

    The premise:
While I am a little disappointed that the Riddler didn’t make an appearance in the final film (I still am holding out some semblance of hope/despair), some digging by determined fans shows some interesting clues that another character from the series could make a previously unannounced appearance: Batman’s faithful sidekick, Robin!

If the rumors prove true, will Nolan’s interpretation of Robin become a memorable addition to the series? Early talk has it that Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is excellent, so Robin will certainly have to make an impression if he shows up. (Cat got your tongue?)

After seeing this revelation, I am excited to potentially see Nolan’s dark twist on Robin. I think the evidence is at least a very interesting coincidence, but it sure seems like a safe bet to me. Read the article and form your own opinion, but I am not embarrassed to make the claim here: Robin will appear in the Dark Knight Rises.

If I am lucky, The Riddler will get a mention (doubtful, but hey, a man can dream…)

  • Back…Sort of

The site is back up and running! Unfortunately, I lost the backup of the images for the site, so I will be spending the next few days uploading new ones!

  • It’s about time, San Diego – Anchorman is back!

Well, it has finally been confirmed by no less than legendary anchorman Ron Burgundy himself that the sequel to the 2004 hit comedy, Anchorman, does exist, and will be hitting theaters sometime next year. Will Ferrel made a surprise (and hilarious) guest appearance as lead anchor Ron Burgundy on Conan with the news. He broke the news with a highly appropriate and somewhat transfixing “yazz” flute performance.

I am really excited for this sequel. Anchorman is quite possibly one of the most original and hilarious comedies of all time (ranking up there with Airplane) and I will definitely be watching this on the big screen in 2013. See, now there is no reason for the world to end – you have something to look forward to in 2013! =D

  • The Hunger Games hype

The tagline for the movie is pretty catchy, I must admit!

I certainly hope the movie lives up to the substantial amount of talk it has generated! I probably won’t get to see it this weekend, though. This would be the perfect opportunity for a guest review! =) *hinthint*

I swear if all these thousands of people lined up for the midnight showing see a debacle on the level of Pluto Nash, the armageddon may come sooner than predicted. And I will laugh. so. hard. I’d like to see this, and like I said, it had better live up to the hype. The books are pretty good! Remember kids, most movies come from books, and few movies are as good (or better) than the books. Imagination is how the old timers got by. Kids today are lazy! LAZY. But watching screens is easier than staring at musty, yellow pages in a well-used tome.

/rantover, enjoy the movie – but you should already be in the theater by now! If you are in the theater reading this – TURN OFF YOUR PHONE YOU SACK OF SQUID!

  • Prometheus

Director Ridley Scott looks to amaze the Sci-Fi Thriller world again with Prometheus. As any good Sci-fi fan knows, Scott is the man responsible for classics such as Alien and Blade Runner.

The plot follows the crew of the spaceship Prometheus in the year 2085, as they explore an advanced alien civilization in search of the origins of humanity. Conceived as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, rewrites developed a separate story that precedes the events of Alien, but which is not directly connected to the films in the Alien franchise. According to Scott, though the film shares “strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak”, and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and ideas. – Wikipedia excerpt

It looks pretty damn awesome to me. It’s been filmed entirely in 3D, and quite frankly looks fantastic just judging by the visuals in the trailer. I don’t think you should pass this film up when it comes out this summer! Who’s ready for some fantastic, three dimensional face-lovin’?

Release Date: June 8, 2012 (USA) Be there or be square.
