  • Atomic Blonde

Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron) is an MI6 agent tasked with recovering top secret KGB intel in East Berlin before the wall falls in the waning days of the Cold War. Can she navigate the coldest city before the heat gets turned up?

  • Dunkirk

Nolan’s’ latest foray is a non-stop, heart-pounding adaptation of one of the most fraught moments in early World War II – the evacuation of 300,000+ English and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, with the Nazi army encroaching on all sides. With this final move, Germany would sweep through the rest of France and essentially hold all of Europe under its iron grip for years. (more…)

  • The Fun and Fear of Fictional Corporations

Weyland-Yutani (Alien). Cyberdyne Systems (Terminator). Encom (Tron). Silver Shamrock (Halloween 3).

What do they have in common? They are the fictional corporations in the background of many iconic film franchises, TV series and universes – oftentimes playing a major or the major role in moving plotlines along through typical big-business greed and manipulation.

  • Neill Blomkamp is taking on big studios

Neill Blomkamp is a director I really enjoy following. He is an accomplished SFX editor, screenwriter and director, and now after a swoon with big name studios, he’s gone back to his roots of short films and independent productions. If you don’t know Neill, he’s the director responsible for District 9, Elysium, and Chappie – All distinct, dystopian sci-fi thrillers.

The greatest challenge – funding. Blomkamp’s Oats Studios has produced some very District 9-esque shorts, full of situational terror and gritty effects, but that level of quality and polish comes at a cost. According to Blomkamp, it’s taken millions of his own dollars to get the first volume of content off the ground.

He’s trying to make the studio viable without having to sell out, and that’s probably the greatest threat to the creative process that any artist fears. I think if anyone could pull it off, it’s Blomkamp. He’s got the chops and the storytelling ability, and he’s created a community of other ‘makers’ to help expand his stories and creations. Hopefully Oats Studios can be a trailblazer for a new ‘Hollywood’ – one where one’s creation and innovation can stand apart from old money and rigid IP control.

  • Baby Driver

I’m going to preface this review by saying that if you only watch one movie this year, make it Baby Driver. Edgar Wright knocked this one out of the park. The chase/escape scenes feel Mad Max-meets-urban center and that’s because Wright asked legendary director George Miller for advice on capturing that stunning aesthetic. Incredible. (more…)

  • First Look – Alien: Covenant

I’m super excited! We have a lot to look forward to from Ridley Scott in 2017 – A sequel to Blade Runner, and the latest entry in the Alien saga, Alien Covenant. I hope you’ve prepared yourselves for the latest Weyland-Yutani Corporation disaster!

  • Get Out

From what has become one of my favorite thriller/horror production companies now, Blumhouse and comic-turned-director Jordan Peele (of Mad TV and Key & Peele fame) comes Get Out – and it’s gaining a lot of attention because of how damn creepy it is. In my book, it’s an instant classic.

  • Studio Ghibli debuts The Red Turtle, joint French-Japanese animation project

    The Red Turtle

It will be a story without dialogue, but based on the trailer I don’t think that’s going to take anything away from the experience.

This is the first Studio Ghibli co-production, and it features French animator Michael Dudok De Wit. His charcoal-penned style is distinctly different from Ghibli’s previous films.

It will be at Cannes Film Festival this summer. French release is slated for June 29, with a later Japanese release in September.

  • The man behind the Xenomorph: Alien tester footage released

Well, that may very well be scarier than the full xenomorph costume that I first encountered at the ripe old age of seven. I’m pretty sure that I won’t see the movie the same way again.

  • Blade Runner Sequel confirmed by Ridley Scott

    blade-runner-sm

Director Ridley Scott (creator of the Alien franchise, duh) recently dropped some details on the long awaited follow up to Blade Runner, stating that the sequel would take place about 30 years after the first movie, placing it around the year 2050. Ryan Gosling is the purported young lead and Harrison Ford will reprise his role from the first film in some capacity.

It’s a surprising info dump from the director, but he has been on a press blitz lately – his latest film, The Martian, adapted from the Sci-Fi novel of the same name, hits theaters this weekend and he has divulged that the sequels to 2012’s Prometheus will indeed tie into the Alien movie universe (a canon confirmation all Alien fans have been waiting for!).

I’m stoked, but I think we are still a while away from seeing this on the big screen. Here’s to hoping we get to see something by the end of our year 2017. Savvy film watchers will remember that the first story takes place in the year 2016 in a future that ended up slightly different than the one imagined in 1982.

What do you think? Were you a fan of the first film? How will the end of the first reconcile with the time shift between movies? ANSWER ME, SMARTIES!
